Wisbech Business & Professional Mens Club - 2015

December 2015

 

Rick Wilson, Club Chairman, welcomed 34 members and guests to the December Christmas meeting held at Mendis, Wisbech. Members enjoyed a 3 course traditional Christmas dinner.

 

This was followed by a cabaret act with Drew Cameron, who featured in the quarter finals of ITV,s Britains Got Talent Show. Drew is a first class impressionist and had members in fits of laughter. He was thanked by Vice Chairman Michael Bates.

 

The first meeting of 2016 will be held on Wednesday January 13th at Mendis when the Annual General Meeting  will be held. Outgoing Chairman Rick Wilson will induct Michael Bates as the new Chairman and, subject to ratification at the AGM, Martin Eggett as the new Vice Chairman.

 

November 2015

 

Rick Wilson, Club Chairman, welcomed 38 members and guests to the November meeting held at The West End Restuarant, Wisbech where they enjoyed a 3 course Carvery Dinner. The guest speaker for the evening was Alan Rogers MBE who has appeared on TV's Richard & Judy and BBC Inside Out programmes. Alan who is a retired Traffic Policeman based in Warwickshire. He gave members a very amusing talk on his life in the Traffic Department covering areas of speeding, theft and introducing new members of the force where in same cases some funny practical jokes were played on them. He was thanked by member Tim Gower.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday December 9th when the guest speaker will be Drew Cameron an impressionist who appeared on TV''s Britain Got Talent programme.

October 2015

Club Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 19 members to the October meeting held at Mendi's Restaurant, Wisbech. Club member Mike Burns gave and interesting talk and presentation on this recent travels with 4 short films. Diane Smith gave a talk on Georgian Wisbech and Peckover House which was well received.

November 2015

 

Club Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 35 members and 3 guests to the September meeting held at Mendi's Restaurant, Wisbech. The speaker for the evening was George Russell, from King's Lynn, a British BRDC Superstar Racing Driver who is racing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for Carlin Racing.

 

The Annual Golf Day proved to be very successfull with Martin Eggett's team emerging triumphant. The runners up were a team led by Steve Holmes. Nearest the Pin  prize was won by Lenk Gostic while Chris Hawkins won the Longest Drive trophy.

 

The next meeting will be on Wednesday 14th October 2015.

 

 

August 2015

 

Club Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 33 members and guests to the August meeting held at Mendi's Restaurant, Wisbech. The speaker for the evening was Roger Rawson who previewed his latest talk and slide show entitled Wisbech Pubs and Hotels, some of which dated back to the 18th Century. He shows a selection of the 288 pubs and hotels which existed in the Borough in the 1950s. He was thanked on behalf of the Club by the outgoing Secretary Phillip Tolley.

 

 

64 members enjoyed a fantastic evening on the 3 hour boat trip from Horing on Friday 7th August. The trip also included a buffet and entertainment by David Fox. The Grand Ball on October 3rd is almost sold out with only 6 tickets available.  

 

The next meeting will be on the 9th September at Mendi's when the speaker will be Formula 4 Champion, George Russell.

 

July 2015

Club Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 43 members and guests to the July meeting held at The Rose & Crown Hotel Wisbech. It was announced that 62 members will be going on the boat trip from Horning on Friday August 7th. 13 teams have entered the Annual Golf Day which is being held on 17th September. To date 147 people have booked for the Grand Ball being held on Saturday October 3rd at The Wisbech St Mary Community Centre.

The club wished Secretary Phillip Tolley all the best and sincere thanks for all the work he had done on behalf of the Club as he will soon be moving from Wisbech to pastures new. Peter Dennis Press Officer will take the role of Acting Secretary until the end of the year.

The guest speaker for the evening was Paul McVeigh the former Tottenham, Norwich & Northern Ireland footballer. Since his retirement Paul is a Sports Presenter for Sky Sports, BT sport & Talk Sport. He is also a keynote speaker who talks to the business world who he translates strategies for success to organisations from all different walks of business life. Paul described  how he has gone from a young boy from the violent streets of Belfast  to competing at the highest level  with and against some of the most well known footballers in the World. Paul is also an author and is in great demand as a guest speaker.

The date of the next club meeting will be at Mendis wisbech on Wednesday August 12th.

June 2015

 

Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 17 members and 1 guest to the June Meeting of the Wisbech Business and Professional Mens' Club on Wednesday 10 June 2015 at Mendis, Wisbech. An update was given on the River Boat Trip, Golf Day and Grand Ball. The Chairman welcomed Raymond Costen, a retired Metropolitan Police Officer, as a new member of the Club and presented him with the Club tie and Badge. The speaker for the evening was Peter Humphrey of Peter Humphrey Associates, Architectural Design and Planning Consultants, Wisbech. He gave an enjoyable, interesting and at times frustrating insight into the numerous policy hurdles and local politics that need to be negotiated when submitting large scale planning applications. He was thanked on behalf of the Club by Vice Chairman Michael Bates.

May 2015

 

Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 21 members and guests to the May Meeting of the Wisbech Business and Professional Men's Club on 13 May 2015 at Mendis, Wisbech. The guest speaker was David Promfet - Principal at the College of West Anglia.

 

April  2015

 

Chairman Rick Wilson welcomed 52 members and guests to the April meeting at the West End Restaurant, Wisbech. During the evening Peter Harvey. an ex-harbour master, was inducted as a new member. The guest speak was David Palmer, an auctioneer who is seen on a regular basis on TV programmes such as Flog it!, Bargain Hunt and Cash in the Attic. He spoke for an hour about his travels as an auctioneer and behind the scene details of programmes her has featured on. He was thanked by member Ludovic Potts who himself is a antique restorer.   

 

 

 

 

 

March 2015

 

30 members and guests were welcomed by Richard Wilson Chairman at Mendis Wisbech to the March Club meeting. During the evening a cheque presentation was made by last years Chairman Phillip Tolley for £1000 to The Wisbech Sea Cadets and a further £500 was sent to the Charity Talking 2 Minds ,this resulting in the Chairman's two chosen charities for 2014.

 


This years charity chosen by Richard Wilson will be in aid of the Trafford Ward North Cambs Hospital. Lead Nurse Sandra Day and Wendy Gill gave the members a talk of the Trafford Ward and thanked the club for choosing them as this years charity. Trafford Ward is a 20 Bed ward giving palliative care and rehabilitation to patients.

It was announced that tickets are going well for The Chairman At Home function on 9th May at the Rose & Crown Hotel. The Ball is on October 3rd at The Wisbech St Mary Community Centre.

The main speaker for the evening was Gary Garford Corporate Director Fenland District Council.He gave a talk and slide presentation on Wisbech 20 20 Vision. Details that were discussed included the Wisbech
Harbour which is now 80% utilised, the proposed Wisbech Rail Link, improving the town centre, bringing derelict buildings back to normality, provide affordable housing. He also spoke of the £7.2 million investment which created the technology centre at the College of West Anglia and the Cromwell Road
development which now included a supermarket, cinema, restaurants and retail outlets Wisbech is the
industry hub in the Fens compared to the other towns in the county.

He was thanked on behalf of the club by Michael Bates Vice Chairman.

The next meeting is on 8th April at The West End Restaurant, Leverington Road when the guest speaker
will be David Palmer one of the auctioneers that appears on BBC'S Flog It programme


February 2015

 

Chairman  Richard Wilson welcomed 41 members and guests to the February meeting at Mendis Wisbech. Andrew Clements Director of AC Emergency Training Solutions was inducted as a new member and presented with his Club Tie and Badge.

It was announced that the Chairman At Home Evening will be held at the Rose & Crown Hotel on Saturday May 30th which will include dinner and entertainment. On 24th July a boat trip on the broads from Horning has been organised. The Annual Golf day this year will be 17th September and The Grand Ball on Saturday October 3rd.

The Chairman then introduced the guest speaker, Sir Graham Bright who is the Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner. His former political career included 18 years as MP for Luton and serving as PPS to Prime Minister John Major. He outlined his role stating that as the commissioner he holds the Police to account. One of the main priorities is protect the front line of the police. He is also in the process of setting up Police Cadets in Peterborough, Soham and Wisbech. He responded to many questions asked by the members. He was thanked on behalf of the club by David Hodgson.

The date of the next meeting is Wednesday March 11th when the evening will be a Charity Presentation night and also in attendance will be representatives of both the Trafford Ward North Cambs Hospital, which is this year’s chosen Chairman’s Charity and Wisbech Sea Cadets which was last year’s chosen charity. Gary Garford from Fenland District Council will also give an update on Wisbech 20/20 Vision.

 

January 2015

 

Phillip Tolley Chairman opened the Annual General Meeting of The Wisbech Business & Professional Mens Club at Mendis Wisbech  on Wednesday January 14th. The Chairman thanked all the members for their support during his year of office and for a very successful year. He then presented the new Chairman Richard Wilson with his chain of office for the coming year. Phillip Tolley was then presented with his past
Chairman's badge. The following officers were then elected. Vice Chairman Michael Bates, Treasurer David Bruch, Secretary Phillip Tolley, Speaker Finder David Hodgson and Press Officer Peter Dennis.
The committee members are  Roy Duff, Martin Eggett, Robin Harnwell, Derrick Holmes, Brian Kierman, Colin Perkins and David Patrick.

Richard Wilson told members he was looking forward to his year of office with the main aim to increase membership of the club. He also advised that his chosen charity would be Trafford Ward North Cambs
Hospital.

The date of the next meeting is Wednesday February 11th when the guest speaker will be Sir Graham Bright who is currently the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire Constabulary.
